ABOUT
THE BOOK:-
A HOOK IN THE SKY has been called a "quintessential" boomer novel, similar to Rachel Joyce's The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. The protagonist however is very different: Robert is a dashing Frenchman just turned sixty, a top manager at the United Nations, who decides upon retirement that withdrawing from active life is not for him. He wants to become an artist but his academic paintings distress his much younger wife, a chic Manhattan socialite who is passionate about contemporary art and runs a gallery in Chelsea. They fight over art - he’s square, she’s cool - but what is at stake is their marriage.
Soon they separate, other women enter Robert's life, including a sexy and deeply troubled young woman and that is only the beginning of his troubles...
As a Boomer novel, A HOOK IN THE SKY explores the Third Act in our lives, issues facing us when we retire and when our job no longer defines us. Who are we now that we no longer work? What shall we do in the years ahead? This is a challenging time of transition when a long-standing marriage may threaten to collapse and the love for a younger woman may cause unexpected harm..
The novel also follows Robert in his wild new life as an artist, exploring the strange, mysterious world of contemporary art. Questions like what is the real place of contemporary art in our lives are raised, and though they are serious questions they are handled with playful irony.
The author has recently retired after 25 years of work in the United Nations and while the book is in no way autobiographical (Claude is happily married), she has drawn on her experience of retirement and that of others. For the Art in the novel, she has relied on what she had learned from her own five year stint in the world of contemporary art (Claude is a painter).
